Scientific Research & Experimental Development Tax Credits
In Canada, a portion of R&D expenses (labor, overhead, materials, purchase of equipment) on R&D performed within the last 2.5 years are refundable to companies as scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED) tax credits. Companies may receive a tax credit up to 68% of salaries, 42% of third-party contracts and 23% of test equipment. In the USA, up to 20% is available. R&D on new or improved products or processes qualifies for the tax credit.
Due to difficulty with the extensive paperwork, or ignorance of the funding program, more than 50% of eligible companies do not apply for their SR&ED tax credits. Last year, more than $3 billion of SR&ED tax credits went unclaimed in Canada alone.
